Lukla weather delays guide
Mountain weather decides when helicopters fly. Plan for it.
Why flights get delayed
Flights in the Khumbu operate under VFR (visual flight rules) only. Pilots need to see terrain, so low cloud, fog in the valleys or strong winds can pause departures. Conditions often cloud over by late morning, which is why the flying window is early.
How to protect your plans
- Build at least one buffer day before an international departure.
- Book the earliest morning departure available.
- Keep your phone on and reachable — we message you if timings change.
- Choose flexible onward bookings where you can.
What we do when weather hits
We monitor conditions with our operators, keep you updated, and move you to the next safe departure. Flights only go when it is safe to fly.
Travel insurance that covers delays and helicopter evacuation is strongly recommended.
